2012 Spring Pilates
The USSSC supports a Pilates group for USSSC members (both men and women) through subsidising classes. The group sessions use a qualified tutor, and classes take place at lunch-time in the garden room on the 5th floor of the UNISON Centre. There are currently two groups of Pilates, one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday, both from 12.30-13.30.
The spring term will run 10 weeks from from 10-11 April. The cost of the 10-week term is £45 (payable in cash or cheque made out to ‘USSSC’). Full details can be obtained from the following reps: Catherine Barral, Susan Mawhood, Bev Riches and Terry Wickenden (all contact details on system).
Please note that the administration involved in organising these classes is done on a voluntary basis so it is expected that colleagues make sure that they pay in advance by the date given and ensure that their membership of USSSC is current, although membership will be checked.
If you are not already a member of USSSC you can download a form to join here.
A little background on Pilates
Pilates strengthens the core of the body. This core affects your entire body. You will be more stable when standing, walking and sitting. You will also have better posture when your core muscles are strengthened. Once you have your core strengthened, it is actually more comfortable to sit properly.
When your posture improves as a result of a Pilates exercise program, you will find that your back is more comfy. If your back is starting to arch, it is likely due to a compression of the spine. This is helped by Pilates exercises, because they lengthen the spine and encourage you to sit and stand with a straight spine.
We advise that if you have any concerns about your health or a pre-existing medical condition that you should consult your GP before embarking on this or any new course of physical activity.
